    Murano (Italian Glassmaking Company)

Murano glassmaking began in the Roman Empire and became prominent by the 8th century in Venice. In 1291, glass production was moved to Murano to protect trade secrets. By the 15th and 16th centuries, Murano was known for innovations like clear glass (cristallo) and new techniques such as filigrana and lattimo.

The industry declined in the 17th century due to competition, but was revived in the 19th century by figures like Antonio Salviati and the Toso Brothers. In the 20th century, Murano embraced new styles like Art Nouveau and Art Deco, with designers such as Vittorio Zecchin and companies like Venini leading the way. After WWII, Murano focused on functional designs while continuing to innovate, regaining its status as the world’s glassblowing capital.
