Heywood Wakefield (American furniture manufacturer)
Heywood-Wakefield, founded in 1826 in Gardner, Massachusetts, became one of the largest U.S. furniture companies after merging with the Wakefield Rattan Company in 1897. Initially known for wicker furniture, the company reinvented itself during the Great Depression, embracing modernist designs.
Designer Gilbert Rohde introduced Art Deco-inspired pieces in the 1930s, followed by collaborations with other designers. The company's iconic "Streamline Modern" line, featuring minimalist furniture in light woods, became popular during the Baby Boom era. However, by the 1960s, its style was seen as outdated, leading to bankruptcy in 1981. Despite this, Heywood-Wakefield’s well-crafted pieces remain appreciated for their timeless design.
