Artist Bio
Ettore Sottsass (Italian designer and architect)
Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007) was a key Italian designer and architect in post-modernism, founding the Memphis Group. Known for bold colors and unconventional materials, he contributed to Italy’s post-WWII rebuilding and worked in furniture, ceramics, and architecture.
Sottsass designed iconic pieces for Olivetti, like the Valentine typewriter, and was inspired by his travels to India. In 1980, he founded Memphis, creating famous works like the Carlton shelf.
After 1985, he focused on architecture, completing projects like the Olabuenaga House and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Ravenna. His legacy bridges modernism and postmodernism, shaping contemporary design.
