Artist Bio
Piero Fornasetti (Italian artist)
Piero Fornasetti (1913–1988) was an Italian artist known for his surreal, whimsical designs on furniture, scarves, and plates. After studying in Milan, he worked with architect Gio Ponti on several projects, including the Architettura series and the San Remo Casino. His signature motif was the face of opera singer Lina Cavalieri, featured in his Tema e Variazioni plate series.
Fornasetti’s work, influenced by classical architecture and surrealism, earned him the Neiman-Marcus Award in 1959. However, by the late 1960s, his commercial success waned. After his death, his son Barnaba took over, and a 1991 retrospective revived interest in his designs. Today, his work is highly sought after by collectors.
