Artist Bio
Eero Saarinen (Finnish-American designer and architect)
Eero Saarinen (1910–1961) was a prominent architect and designer, born to famed parents Eliel Saarinen, an architect, and Loja Saarinen, a textile artist. He grew up surrounded by design, working with his father on projects from a young age. Saarinen studied sculpture in Paris and later pursued architecture at Yale University. His career began at Cranbrook, where he taught and collaborated with Charles Eames, with whom he co-created a groundbreaking molded plywood chair collection that won the 1940 Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition.
Saarinen’s friendship with Florence Knoll led to a long professional relationship, with Saarinen designing iconic pieces for Knoll, including the Tulip chairs, Womb chair, and the 70 series seating collection. Known for his sculptural approach to furniture design, he meticulously refined his designs, achieving organic and graceful forms using modern materials.
In addition to his furniture designs, Saarinen was a leader in modernist architecture, creating groundbreaking works such as the Gateway Arch, the TWA Terminal, and the CBS headquarters. His work expanded modernism to include curvilinear, organic forms, making a lasting impact on both architecture and design.
