Artist Bio
Cesare Leonardi & Franca Stagi (Italian designers and architects)
Cesare Leonardi (1935-2021) and Franca Stagi (1937-2008) were influential Italian architects and designers who operated a studio in Modena, making significant contributions to architecture, furniture design, and urban landscaping. Leonardi, trained at the University of Florence, worked alongside Stagi to develop a design philosophy that harmonized architecture with nature. Stagi was particularly known for her work in urban planning and parks, and her Dondolo chair exemplified her creative furniture design. Together, they focused on local architectural projects, especially parks and public spaces.
Their work has been exhibited in major institutions, including the Cartier Foundation in Paris and MoMA in New York. Leonardi passed away in 2021, and Stagi in 2008. Their designs, including their research on trees, are also held in the V&A Museum in London and the Vitra Design Museum in Germany.
