Artist Bio
James Mont (Turkish American Designer)
James Mont, born Demetrios Pecintoglu in Istanbul in 1904, was a renowned furniture designer and interior decorator whose creations were popular with both Hollywood elites and New York’s Mafia figures. After immigrating to the U.S. in the 1920s, he began designing lighting fixtures and furniture, which caught the attention of crime bosses like Frankie Yale, Charles “Lucky” Luciano, and Frank Costello. Mont’s opulent, functional designs were influenced by Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, and chinoiserie. He also created innovative pieces like collapsible home bars and desks with secret compartments. Mont designed for the 1939 World’s Fair and became friends with celebrities like Bob Hope and Lana Turner. His work saw a resurgence in the 1990s and remains highly sought after by collectors.
